Burdastyle Lace Waist Dress.

This is a long overdue post about a dress I made in March(I'm really behind with this). Introducing the Burdastyle 05/2013 #126 Lace Waist Dress. When I first saw the dress in the magazine, I instantly knew that I wanted to make it. I was a bit offstandish about the pleats at first but now I think they aren't that bad. Unless I don't press them properly before wearing(if I don't I look pregnant).

Can I even be more slouched during a photoshoot?
For the fabric I used a cotton fabric with a bit of stretch. The fabric is quite thick and structured so it makes the dress a bit more strict. Next time I will use a lighter fabric(and there WILL be a next time because I really like the simplicity of it).

I made a few alterations to the pattern. First I had to add a bit to the bust line because I fall between two sizes. My hips and waist were size 38 but my bust is size 40. So I added a bit. I also lowered the neckline by 2cm, because I didn't like how high the neckline was on the pattern. I also didn't sew the lace to the dress like instructed and made a belt that closes with snap buttons.

As the fabric was quite thick already, I didn't use lining in the bodice as instructed and finished the neckline and armholes with a lace bias tape instead. Now I have instant accessorizing when I put the dress on. Yay laziness.

Burda patterns don't have seam allowance so I had to add the allowance, but when I was in the first fitting, I noticed that the dress was WAY too big. In the end, I noticed that if I had cut exactly the pattern piece without allowance, I would have gotten the fit I needed. I also had to take off 2cm from the shoulder in the back because my back is a bit shorter than the standard. I'm used to that and it's not  a big deal.

I also shortened the skirt about 5cm because I didn't like the original length. I feel like I look shorter if the skirts end up at or below the knee. I'm not a tall girl, but I have long legs. So it's either floor length or above knee length for dresses and skirts for me.

The dress is closed with an invisible zipper and all the seam allowances are serged.

Anyways I love this dress, even though I got a second degree burn on my leg when I was pressing it(steam bounced off). But no pain, no gain, right? Plus I've gotten a ton of compliments on the dress and who wouldn't like that?

And the moral of this is PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU ARE WORKING WITH IRONS. The iron and the steam can cause serious injuries. Stay safe.
